EMDR

Do you have pervasive negative thoughts that talk therapy doesn’t seem to help? What about yucky things that have happened that continue to haunt you? Are you having flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive thoughts that you can’t seem to shake? Are you ready to stop these things from intruding on your life?

EMDR could help.

WHAT EMDR IS & WHAT IT DOES

EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
It’s a type of therapy that helps decrease the impact of traumatic experiences and

shift those negative thought patterns to more positive ones.

Click on the video below to learn more about what EMDR does and how it works.

What if you could live your life without jumping at the slightest sound, move through life without beating yourself up and calling yourself all sorts of names in your head (or even out loud)?

What if you could decrease the nightmares, and not feel like you get punched in the chest every time you run into something that triggers a yucky memory?

What if you didn’t need to experience that continuous negative self-talk and you could walk into a situation feeling confident and in control?

Do these sound like dreams of things that could never happen?

These are some of the things that EMDR can help with. EMDR is one of those therapeutic approaches that can help with these things. It doesn’t make you forget what’s happened, but it can decrease the intensity of these things so you don’t feel like you’re spinning every time you run into a triggering thing.

If any of these sound like you and you think that EMDR is right for you,

we have four different ways that you can access it.

Regular
Therapy

Supplementary
EMDR

EMDR
Intensive

You can do EMDR throughout your regular therapy, you can do
Supplementary EMDR, or an EMDR Intensive.

EMDR in regular therapy

EMDR in your regular therapy involves asking your therapist if they’re trained in EMDR, and if they are, asking them if you can incorporate it into your therapy treatment.

These sessions done during your 50 minute therapy session, where you will review things in the first few minutes, do EMDR for part of the session, and then debrief it at the end.

supplementary EMDR

Supplementary EMDR is when you have a primary therapist either within MCC or outside of MCC that is not trained in EMDR, but you want to receive EMDR treatment. The way it works is that you work with your primary therapist, and then you come and see someone on our team that offers Supplementary EMDR, and then you return to your primary therapist.

STEP 1 - You do an Intake Consultation with our Intake Coordinator.
STEP 2 - She then plugs you in with the best fit EMDR therapist to do an EMDR assessment (50 minutes).
STEP 3 - Once your assessment is complete then your EMDR therapist plugs you in for an EMDR session. (The number of sessions is dependent upon you as the client, what it is that you want to work through, and what your EMDR therapist assesses the need is.)

One of the unique things about Supplementary EMDR is that as the client we only focus on what the situation or situations are that you want to work through specifically with EMDR. We don’t go into the rest of your history or your life necessarily, as those parts of your story are unpacked with your primary therapist.

We typically recommend doing one or two EMDR sessions and then returning to your primary therapist for a talk therapy session to debrief and verbally process what it is that you’ve been exploring in EMDR, then continuing that pattern as long as you wish to receive EMDR.
This is not a hard rule, it is just a typical recommendation as we’ve seen the most benefit from this type of set up.

Half of the payment is required at booking to reserve your spot, and the other half is due at the beginning of your intensive.
* Offered by all therapists in-person w Julie, Orr & Dan, Kirsten or Susan

EMDR intensives

You can do an EMDR Intensive if you are currently seeing a therapist at MCC, or if you have a different primary therapist.

Often things are worked through faster in an Intensive, as you get to do more EMDR in the period of time as you’re not catching up on the week and other life things at the beginning of sessions.

We currently offer half day and full day intensives virtually.

Half Day: 2 ½ - 3 hours of therapy and is $600-$800

Full Day: 5 - 6 hours of therapy and is $1200-$1500

Half of the payment is required at booking to reserve your spot, and the other half is due at the beginning of your intensive.
* Only offered by Julie. Can be offered in-person or virtual.

EMDR retreats

EMDR Retreats are something that can be really beneficial for individuals who have experienced a lot of trauma in their life, or who have PTSD. This can be a great option for individuals who are, or were, in the military, emergency service workers, or have extensive childhood abuse. The retreats are intense, however the lasting impact of working through so much of the yucky stuff can be really incredible. The retreats are not for everyone as they do require quite a bit of emotional endurance and self-awareness.

We currently offer 2-day and 3-day retreats in person at a beautiful waterfront lake house in Durham Region, Ontario. If a retreat is something that interests you, you’re welcome to stay at the Lake House during your retreat. You would be the only one staying there, and your therapist would come to the lake house each day to do EMDR. The benefit of staying at the lake house is that after the day of therapy you can feel quite exhausted, and need some time on your own in a restful environment. The lake house provides you exactly that, with a huge patio and beautiful view of the lake. Sometimes people find it overwhelming to go back home to their regular environment and their families after a day of intensive therapy, and so this option can be really beneficial for those situations. This can also be really helpful if you’re seeking intensive EMDR, and have to travel from where you live.

One of the unique things about the retreats is that everything is provided for you. You just show up at the lakehouse.
Food, therapy, and yoga (should you chose) is all included. You do not need to worry about anything or even leaving the lakehouse if you don’t want to. You just need to show up and everything else is taken care of, it truly is a holistic experience.

2-Day Retreat

Between 5-7 hours of therapy per day and is $4,400-$6,000

3-Day Retreat

Between 5-7 hours of therapy per day and is $6,000-$8,000

Half of the payment is required at booking to reserve your spot, and the other half is due at the beginning of your retreat.

* Only offered by Julie. Can only be offered in-person.

what is emdr?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short. This type of therapy was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with the military, however over the last 30 years it has been expanded to help people process and work through all different kinds of experiences. It is one of the best treatments out there for trauma and PTSD.

how does emdr work?

EMDR uses something called bilateral stimulation that brings both sides of your brain online to help your brain process through the experience mentally, emotionally and physically. Bilateral stimulation can be done in a variety of ways; sometimes it’s through moving your eyes back and forth, tapping on both sides of your body, beeps going in your ears back and forth - none of the ways are painful, they just are sensory stimulation on both sides of your body. When you experience something traumatic you brain, body, and emotions take a picture, if this isn’t processed within 24-72 hours, it essentially gets stored in your brain in a filing cabinet. What happens is when you get triggered by something that filing cabinet flies open and those experiences can hijack your brain which is why it can be tricky to talk yourself through what happened. EMDR brings the picture or memory online and brings the verbal and reasoning part of your brain online to help yourself talk through the experience to process and integrate it in your memory. EMDR doesn’t make you forget memories, but it can take the intensity and impact out of the memories.
