TRAUMA
Trauma is often a very misunderstood concept that we have preconceived notions of what it is and what it is not. Trauma can be anything that causes us to feel helpless, powerless and out of control. There is often a deep sense of shame around admitting that we have even felt that way and that we were not in control. Having a therapist walk through those experiences and emotions with you can be incredibly healing and powerful. As scary as it might be to invite someone into some of those vulnerable places, it can be so freeing to have someone sit with you in it. As we do that, it helps you through those experiences instead of continuing to stay in them on your own.
Covid is something that has stolen something from all of us. We have all had our worlds turned upside down, whether it’s been job losses, milestones missed, having to work from home, our kids being in and out of school, navigating working and learning from home, or working on the front lines, Covid has robbed each of us of something. Walking through Covid has been a challenge as it can seem like there is always something happening and never feeling settled. We often can feel like we’re walking a tight rope and we’re not sure when the next gust of wind is going to knock us off of it. Having someone walk through the challenges, grief and trauma that Covid has caused can be really powerful. Not only have you experienced your own individual trauma, but society as a whole has experienced a collective trauma. It is important in this process to work through these experiences with someone who is trusted, and who can help you label and frame what has happened and is happening for you. Having a therapist walk through these experiences with you can help you reframe, label, and process the emotions behind what you’ve experienced throughout these last several years.
POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
PTSD is when the symptoms of traumatic events have become pervasive and long standing. PTSD is a psychological disorder that is diagnosed by a Psychologist or Psychiatrist. Having a therapist to work through the symptoms of trauma and the traumatic event can help decrease the affects of the trauma. This is done by learning skills and tools to cope with the emotions and symptoms of the experience and then desensitizing the traumatic event in a controlled way.
SELF-ESTEEM
How we view ourselves and our own value and self-worth determines many of the actions, beliefs, and emotions that we experience on a day to day basis. Many of these beliefs are deep rooted and we don’t even recognize that they are not accurate. When you invite someone into the journey with you, they are able to counter some of the beliefs that you have to help reframe the way that you see yourself and increase your self-esteem.
GRIEF
Grief is a universal experience. It is something that we often associate with the death of someone, when it is actually more broad than that. Grief is something that we can experience in response to changes in our lives. These changes can be anything from finishing a milestone, to the death of someone, a relational breakdown or dreams being unfulfilled. Walking through the stages of grief with someone who can help normalize the emotions and experiences can help you move through those experiences instead of staying stuck in the grief.
LIFE CHANGES
Life changes can be some of the most challenging things to adapt to. These can be anything from finishing school, starting a relationship to moving across the country. Having a counsellor to help you walk through navigating these changes can be really helpful to begin to learn new skills to adapt and implement new strategies to cope with the things that have happened.
